12 Nov Debunking Myths about Root Canal
When we hear “root canal”, we instinctively think of pain. There are a lot of misconceptions about root canal treatments even before someone gets the procedure. Most of our fears are based on what we hear from other people’s experience, or we get our information from the wrong resource. But it should not be the case anymore especially with the advance technology and techniques that most dentist and endodontics used now.
Before you believe the negative things about root canal, here are some information to clear the myths surrounding the procedure.
Myth 1. Root canal is painful.
Most people’s perception is that root canal is painful. The truth is that the procedure does not cause pain, but instead, root canal relieves it. What causes the pain is the severe dental infection from the tooth. Root canal treatment gets rid of the damaged tissue; therefore relieving the pain.
Myth 2. Root canal treatment is a long process.
Root canal treatment does not need to be a lengthy process. With the advancement of technology and new techniques, the procedure may take between one to two hours depending on the extent of the infection. A follow up appointment is only necessary to ensure that tooth is completely restored.
Myth 3. Root canal causes illness.
The theory which claims root canalcan cause illnesses such as heart disease, kidney disease or arthritis is false. This research from Dr. Price which was written 100 years ago, has never been successful in proving that the treatment contribute to such illnesses. Root canal treatment is a safe procedure that helps eliminate bacteria from the infected area, which purpose is to prevent infection and also saves the tooth.
Myth 4. Extraction is a better alternative to root canal treatment.
This is false. The best option if possible, is saving your natural teeth. An artificial tooth is a good alternative but having your natural tooth is still far better. You can sometimes be limited on certain foods with artificial teeth so it’s preferable to keep your original tooth. Also, nothing beats a nice smile that has all your natural teeth intact. Always ask your dentist if root canal treatment is an option before doing an extraction procedure.
Myth 5. Root canals are only needed when in pain.
Root canal treatment is still required if teeth is dead even though patients do not feel any pain. This is to prevent the spreading of infection to the tooth.
For your dentist or specialist to know if you need a root canal therapy, they examine the teeth during a regular check-up. To confirm if teeth is on its way or is dead, your specialist will do some test. Once tested, that’s when they decide if you need to undergo root canal treatment.
